Weekend Twenty20 matches a local batsman’s paradise

29 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM

Batsmen were on top last Saturday with six teams out of eight knocking out scores of 150 or more in local Twenty20 cricket.

The top innings total was achieved by Nambucca Hotel with 4/179.

They travelled out to Taylors Arm and batted first, where Dean Welsh top-scored with 58 followed by Michael Stennett (51), Hector Edwards (23) and Dane Luffman (20).

Dean and Hector opened the innings with a 55 run stand. Taylors Arm in reply gave it a real chase but came up short with 158.

Their best was Paul Mulvihill (46 not out) and Rick Fry (34 not out).

This pair put respectability back into their team’s total after coming together at 7/79 and then batting on for an unbroken 79 run eighth wicket stand. Dane Luffman was Hotel’s top wicket-taker with 3/18 from his four overs. Brothers Matthew and Mike Lindsay took two wickets each.

Macksville Ex-Services travelled out to Bowraville where they batted first and scored 7/162.

Jake Fuller again batted well, this time remaining 64 not out. He was well supported by James Collison (41) and Monty Schmidt (23), Jake and James put on 56 for their second wicket stand.

Josh Fleming was Bowraville’s best with 3/33 from his four overs.

Bowraville in reply also went close but came up 10 runs short with 8/152. Ron Gleeson (45), Ken Walker (25) and Brendan Scott (24 not out) were the best, while Tyler Doolan with 3/23 was Ex-Services’ best with the ball.

Warrell Creek also did well when they batted first at Coronation Park scoring 4/164 against Nambucca Heads. Joe Costa top-scored with 74 while Reece Adams (41 not out) and Tom Mann (24) gave great support.

Joe and Tom opened the innings with a super 91 run stand.

Nambucca in reply could not reach this total after 20 overs and finished at 8/148. Steve Savage remained 44 not out while Greg Watts (31) and Troy Rixon (19) batted well. Ground fielding was also a feature of this game with some great catches being held. None were any better than Brad Southern’s effort by catching Greg Watts on the boundary thus preventing Greg from scoring a six.

The last game of the round saw Macksville Country Club play Talarm on Thistle Park turf.

Country Club, batting first, scored 6/104 with Richard Spain (28), Darryl Crossingham (24) and Jason O’Donnell (19) top-scoring.

John Cowan was Talarm’s best with 4/17.

Talarm in reply struggled at 6/41. Opener Chris Budden (38 not out) and number eight batsman John Cowan (35 not out) came together and steered the team to a four wicket win in the last over with an unbroken partnership of 66.

Rick De Ruiter (2/9) and Darryl Crossingham (2/14) were Country Club’s best with the ball.

Next Saturday will see double the cricket with each team playing two games in the afternoon.

Talarm, Nambucca Heads, Bowraville and Taylors Arm will play at Coronation Park and Biffin Field while Warrell Creek, Nambucca Hotel, Macksville Ex-Services and Macksville Country Club will play at the turf and Donnelly/Welsh.

Teams are asked to start at 1pm sharp or earlier and the first inning’s batting is not to go beyond one hour and 15 minutes.
