Surf club makes nine rescues in rough seas

05 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
Big seas and king tides combined over the Christmas weekend to cause real problems for the patrolling members of the Macksville-Scotts Head Surf Life Saving Club, who were forced to close the beach over the holiday period.

Despite the closure swimmers still went into the water, and the patrolling members had to make nine successful rescues over the weekend, as well as

salvaging a stalled inflatable rubber boat, which was marooned 300 metres from shore.

Conditions improved over the rest of the week, however, and patrols over the New Years’ weekend proved far less eventful to the pleasure of the

patrols.

While patrols will continue over the next months the club’s attention will now turn to the Country Championships, to be held at South West Rocks over the

weekend of January 14.

Four boat crews from Scotts Head will be competing, two Masters teams, the reserve men’s and the women’s crews, with the women’s crew in particular

hoping to continue their success over the current season.

In other club news, the Christmas

raffle was won by Wayne Provost of East Street, while a new squad of bronze medallion and Surf Life Saving certificate candidates will begin training on Sunday, February 5.

Anyone interested in joining this squad should keep this date in mind.
