Record field expected for Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day

05 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
This year, the 19th annual Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day, will raise its total contribution to the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia to over $300,000.

The question is, by how much?

Organiser Ray Stig was looking forward to a record-breaking field teeing off for the event at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club this Sunday (8th), with 220 already booked in early this week.

Special guests, Penrith Panthers NRL player Nigel Plum and the Children’s Cancer Institute’s Stephen Gallagher will tee off on the day.

The day has been supported by a number of

businesses, who had sponsored holes and prizes, as well as sporting identities and companies, who had donated items of memorabilia to be auctioned in the club after the morning of golf (see full list on page 21).

Tee-off will be from 7.30am, with the auction to take place after lunch at about 1.30pm. Mr Stig said anyone was welcome to come along to join in the lunch (at $5 a head) and take part in the charity auction.

The memorial day was started 19 years ago after the death of Elly Stig from childhood cancer. Mr Stig, Elly’s grandfather, said the community’s support for the event had always been strong, and that support was just as evident as ever in 2012.

He urged people to support the cause, which helped support research into the treatment of childhood cancer.

“If you ever visit a children’s cancer ward, it completely changes your view on life,” he said.
