Whale washes up at Nambucca

29 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
Nambucca Heads beach walkers were met with a shocking discovery yesterday morning as the skies cleared.

The heavy rains of the past week and rough seas subsided to reveal a small whale carcass washed ashore at Main Beach in Nambucca Heads.

Nambucca Shire Council Ranger Craig Englert said the whale washed up on the beach on Tuesday morning.

National Parks and Wildlife officers had taken samples of the whale’s flesh for research and to investigate the cause of death.

The body was believed to be a short-finned pilot whale; and according to Susan Crocetti from National Parks and Wildlife, it was only the second reported pilot whale to become beached on an Australian shoreline in 10 years.

Council is awaiting to hear from the National Parks and Wildlife before it can bury the carcass.
