Talk about a rollercoaster of adventure...
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is every bit as intriguing as the name of the film itself.
As Heath Ledger’s final appearance on the silver screen, the movie is a satisfying display of the talent that the world adored.
Despite the sudden death of Ledger, a key character, midway through filming, director Terry Gilliam was saved by Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, who each serve as alternate-dimension versions of the Ledger character when he crosses through Dr Parnassus’ paranormal mirror.
I love these type of fantastical adventures which bring out the child inside and give the moral compass a stir.
Though a little dark for a children’s fantasy, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is set in present day and follows the mystical travelling show of Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) – a man who once won immortality in a bet with the devil, Mr Nick (Tom Waits).
Though many would be foolish to gamble with the devil a second time, Dr Parnassus’ lust for youth saw him do just that.
But there is always a catch and this one involved giving his firstborn child to the devil at the age of 16 – the age his daughter is about to reach. Desperate to save his little girl from her dreadful fate, Dr Parnassus presents the devil with a wager too good to refuse... and so journey heats up. Screening at Nambucca Cinema Centre, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is rated PG.
