WIRES are urging people to be alert this summer, in light of a number of snake sightings in the area recently.
Families are urged to learn how to respond to bites quickly and properly, and to seek medical attention in the unlikely event they occur.
Mid North Coast Wires Reptile Coordinator, Tom Damaschke said be cautious and if you see a snake, leave it be.
“The best advice we can give to anyone is to not under any circumstances approach the snake.
“You will only encounter problems if you provoke or threaten them,” he said.
“If however a snake were to make its way into your garage or pool, the appropriate thing to do is contact WIRES and they will contact a snake handler or come to handle the situation.”
Mr Damaschke also said in the unlikely event someone is bitten, simple first aid is needed.
“Swift administration of first aid is crucial and can help save the life of someone who has been bitten,” he said.
First aid procedures for snakebites are as follows:
• Place a firm bandage to the limb commencing at the bite site, then going down to the fingers or toes and then up to the limb to the shoulder or hip
• Immobilise the patient.
• Bring transport to the patient - the patient should not attempt to walk or run
• The bandage should not be removed until the patient has reached hospital
• Call 000 once First Aid has been applied.
All NSW hospitals have a comprehensive list of local species and treatment protocols.
There have been a number of reported sightings in Valla Beach, Bowraville and Nambucca.
Mr Damaschke said the number of calls fluctuates depending on the weather.
“There are no more snakes now than ever, but with the warmer weather, snakes are more active.
“It just comes down to acting appropriately if a snake is spotted.”
