Erosion along the Scotts Head beachfront has long been an issue to the coastal community, but tidal surges have caused progressive damage in recent months.
High tides have continued to strike main beach, breaking apart the fractured boat ramp, turning up covered hazards and removing several metres of vegetated dune, causing large trees and walkways to fall from their establishment.
Scotts Head Dunecare member Moira Ryan said these concerns have continued to worsen with the weather since July.
The Department of Lands was contacted about this issue and in response advised it was a natural phenomenon, and that the sand would return in spring.
Options to minimise the damage are few and far between; controlling the sea to stop the issue is not a possibility.
Safety to residents and visitors is a primary concern for Ms Ryan, who is seeking help in removing the trees from the beach, before they are washed into water and create a hazard.
“I have been told by swimmers that there are snags in the water,” she said.
Awareness may be the only action the public can undertake against the raging sea. Ms Ryan has called on people to be cautious for their own safety, and avoid sitting and playing on the dunes.
Only time will tell if nature returns the Scotts Head beaches to their former glory.
