Rugby league outrage

24 Sep, 2009 12:20 PM
“A disgusting reflection of the behaviour that is accepted in this day and age” – that is what Group 2 chief administrator Jim Anderson said about the brawl which marred Sunday’s Under-18s grand final.

“I am totally disgusted with the players,” Mr Anderson told the Guardian News this week.

He said the vicious fight not only showed poor sportsmanship, but implicated an undisciplined nature in Groups 2’s younger players, which was “totally unacceptable”.

Mr Anderson viewed the footage on Tuesday with officials from the Sawtell and Nambucca Heads clubs.

He said a full investigation would follow and those players, and spectators, involved would be “treated accordingly”.

“If the players are found guilty they face suspension from the rugby league,” Mr Anderson said.

“Those members of the public who got involved will be dealt with accordingly.

“There is no excuse (for their behaviour). It is a game of sport – there were 2000 others on the grounds that did not feel the need to get involved.”

Mr Anderson said the brawl not only tarnished the reputation of country league, but also overshadowed all the positive work committees carried out during the season.

Under-18s Roosters coach Hilton Humphries said the brawl was a disappointing end to an otherwise positive season.

“What the teams did was inexcusable, but what was worse was the spectators getting involved,” Mr Humphries said.

“Group 2 management will jump down hard on these players, but it those spectators who should be banned for life,” Mr Humphries said.

Nambucca Valley Police Inspector Mark Rowney said local police were also investigating the matter.

After viewing footage of the fight, several members of the public were interviewed this week. Charges are anticipated, pending further interviews to be carried out.
