THE CLARENCE Nambucca Region of the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has been active over the last few weeks with flooding in the Bellinger, Clarence, Nambucca and Orara catchments. Water levels across all four rivers have now fallen or are remaining steady with many residents beginning to leave or return to their isolated properties.
The SES reminds all residents to remain vigilant to the after effects of severe weather and flooding which can result in major damage to access roads and properties, potentially causing a range of health and safety issues.
Region controller Caroline Ortell said: “Flood water is deceptively dangerous. People think that they know the roads in their areas but with the amount of water that has been through in recent weeks, it can cause large potholes and also contain large pieces of debris."
"Any water still flowing can also knock people over very easily.
“If you drive, ride or walk through flood water, you not only put your own lives in danger, but you also put the lives of SES volunteers and other emergency services at risk. Our message is simple 'If it’s flooded, forget it'.”
The SES reminds residents returning to flood affected properties that they should ensure structural stability of walls, windows and ceilings and ensure electricity and gas are turned off before entering.
Homeowners should also wear suitable clothing when cleaning up, be aware of any slip, trip or fall hazards, never eat food that has been in contact with floodwater and have a fresh supply of drinking water.
While the Valley is no stranger to flooding, locals should always be prepared for future events by knowing their risk, where to go and who to call in the likelihood of danger. They should also prepare an emergency kit.
Suggestions for the kit and advice how to prepare, act and recover prior to, during and after floods can be found on the SES website at www.ses.nsw.gov.au or calling your local SES unit on 132-500.
