Motorists put lives at risk driving into floodwater

26 Jan, 2012 09:27 AM
Authorities have pleaded with motorists to stay clear of floodwaters after two incidents in the Nambucca this week.

One couple was rescued for the second time in as many weeks trying to drive over the flooded Greys Crossing.

“They actually drove around the flood warning sign,” SES Nambucca Valley Controller Leanne Cooper said.

The vehicle was pulled from the scene by a tractor.

Ms Cooper said because the couple had done this before, the incident was reported to police.

Earlier that day a teenager had a lucky escape when he managed to drive his ute off flooded Lanes Bridge.

The male driver attempted to drive over the bridge, however rushing floodwaters pushed the vehicle onto the guard rail.

“This saved his life,” she said. "He then managed to reverse his car off the bridge.”

The incident was witnessed by several people, including two SES personnel who were on a reconnaissance mission.

Meanwhile as if further evidence of the conditions were needed, livestock floating downstream past Macksville Police Station towards the river mouth about 6.30pm on Tuesday.
