Friday saw the culmination of 13 years work – finally our little old shed on the banks of the river, which began its life as the fishing inspector’s boat shed, was knocked down.
Before I get in trouble for removing a bit of our river’s history, please blame the real culprits.
More than 10 years ago a pest inspection located significant damage to the bearers, which held up the shed.
Combined with the changes in our delivery of training, the meeting of OHS requirements and its size, the old shed no longer met the needs of our rescue service.
Early Friday morning, an excavator was delivered to the site. By lunch time the shed’s roof was gone and soon after there was a pile of timber waiting to be carted away.
The piers were no match for the pulling power of the excavator. A few old stumps, however, tested it out.
This week will see the construction process begin.
Soon, there will be a new building replacing the old, meeting all the present and future needs of Nambucca Marine Rescue.
A big thankyou to North Coast Recyclers and Demolitions for their assistance in removing the old shed.
Paul spent many hours helping organising and finally doing the demolition.
Saturday evening and a message came through warning us of a possible tsunami to hit our part of the coast at around 9am on Sunday morning.
All crew were placed on standby and immediate notification to those planning to use the waterways early in the morning took place.
The media did its job by warning everyone, which meant all we could do was stand by and wait.
Members stood guard on Captain Cook lookout, with about 50 other people, to watch a couple of ripples wash ashore.
Although no waves were sighted, the effects of the King tide disguised any significant changes to our waterways.
Training for members next Sunday starts at 8am, at Stuart Island.
Finally for those who were worried about our chief fundraiser Lois, she is taking it easy for a while after a health scare. Even though you may not see her as often as you used to, she is still busy organising and planning events for the future.
