Nambucca Heads’ Riverside Drive road has had a turbulent past, but this issue may have found a resolution after Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker made an election promise.
An investment of $5 million was guaranteed by Mr Hartsuyker to improve the instability of the road between the visitor information centre and the northern entrance to Woodbell Street.
Mr Hartsuyker said Riverside Drive, Nambucca Heads, was one of the most dangerous road blackspots on the North Coast and it needed to be fixed for motorist and resident safety.
Independent engineers undertook a geotechnical assessment of the area and advised council that the bulk of the road was a hazard, Mr Hartsuyker said.
Upslope embankments ‘slipped’ on a regular basis during periods of “reasonably heavy rainfall”.
“The coalition understands the Nambucca Shire Council simply does not have the financial resources to address this problem as a single works project,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
Nambucca Shire Council Mayor Rhonda Hoban said to remedy the risk to motorists and private property each section would need to be fixed in relation to priority and the availability of funds.
The recent rate rise of one per cent provided council with an additional $75,000 each year, which would take many years to resolve the problem.
An injection of $5million would make a huge difference, Cr Hoban said.
