Locals irate over council plans for sports field

A David and Goliath clash between the Scotts Head community and government entities is unfolding as tensions rise with the development of a management plan for the township.

Residents flocked to Macksville’s council chambers, on August 18 and 19, to voice their concern to local councillors about the plan’s blueprint, which consumes almost half of Scotts Head’s Adin Street Oval with a designated precinct for holiday vans at the beachside caravan park.

Scotts Head resident Greg Hill said he was opposed to plan and did not see the justification in moving vans that were non-compliant onto the town’s recreation area.

“This master plan is a disaster plan,” Mr Hill said.

Nambucca Shire Council General Manager Michael Coulter, at an ordinary meeting on August 19, said a response was received from the Land and Property Management Authority (LPMA) about making the Scotts Head village green the first priority for arrangement.

The letter indicated development of the town green would be dependant on the removal of semi-permanent vans at the eastern reach of the caravan park, which would open 2,500 square metres to the day-use area and revert into council’s possession.

It was advisable that council not accept responsibility for the day-use area, which had previously been maintained by the trust, Mr Coulter said.

Councillors resolved to advise the LPMA that council does not support the use of Adin Street Oval, but are willing to negotiate in good faith.

Council would not accept responsibility for the day-use area’s maintenance and meet with the minister for lands to discuss these issues.

Mr Coulter said that only the exhibited master plan was acceptable to the LPMA and if no agreement was reached then the management of the semi-permanents would fall into council’s hands in 2013.
