A drunken Macksville man who narrowly avoided a deadly head-on collision with a police vehicle while deliberately driving on the wrong side of the Pacific Highway has been jailed for 12 months.
Luke Adam Nunn, 27, will spend a minimum of nine months behind bars after officers were forced to draw their weapons on him during a pursuit through the centre of Macksville on June 15.
In Kempsey Local Court last week Nunn was fined $1300 for numerous driving offences including driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle without a licence and was placed on a two year good behaviour bond.
Nunn and his girlfriend were returning from a visit to his girlfriend’s mother’s house in Nambucca Heads when they got involved an argument.
During the argument Nunn made threats to kill himself and his partner by driving into oncoming traffic.
He then allegedly swerved to the wrong side of the road into the path of an oncoming vehicle before returning to the correct lane.
A short distance down the road Nunn did it again, this time into the direct path of a police vehicle.
Two police officers in the vehicle braced themselves for a serious collision only to see Nunn’s car miss them by the narrowest of margins. Police quickly executed a u-turn and gave chase.
Police drew their weapons and instructed Nunn to raise his hands and place them on the steering wheel, which he did.
He was handcuffed and taken to Macksville Police Station where he recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.19. In court this week Nunn was banned from driving for five years. He cannot drive again until June 14, 2015.
