The Scotts Heads Public School has lashed out at claimes it will not continue its swim and survive program for the village’s school children.
Following Nambucca Shire Council’s announcement to cut funding for the popular learn-to-swim program at Macksville pool, Scotts Head Public School principal Angie Evans said the school was
disappointed to be incorrectly included among the list of local school’s that would abandon the program due to the increased cost.
“It has always been a priority of Scotts Heads P&C and the community at Scotts Head that every student learns to swim,” Mrs Evans said.
“Being a coastal village it is important that our kids have survival skills in the water.”
While the school was disappointed with council’s decision, teachers assured the students would not be denied an opportunity to learn life skills in the water.
Through school fundraisers, community donations and strong parental support, the school was able to continue with the learn-to-swim program at a cost of $45 per child for 10 days of lessons.
Mrs Evans said she wanted her students to get all they could from the program and incorporated a segment on learning about rips and ocean dangers for the more advanced swimmers.
