No official cause of death has been released after a fatal rock fishing trip at Valla Beach last week.
The small community has been mourning the loss of 62-year-old local man Noel Walsh, who went missing after leaving for a solo fishing expedition on November 10.
His body was recovered the next morning after an extensive search by community members and emergency service personnel.
In a tribute to Mr Walsh, and his widow, Lyn, family friend Kaz Selby put together these words:
“Sadly, last week, a lovely man called Noel Walsh from Valla Beach died as he was fishing off the rocks. He was a dedicated and determined fellow when it came to fishing. Once again, someone nice in our town dies and I think, why didn’t I take more time to get to know them better?
Many in Valla Beach often saw Noel walking very slowly to the beach with his rod and bucket.
He would always give us a nod and smile.
Then, you’d see him coming home, his bucket most times empty.
I can only think the ocean was his solitude, his place of peace and joy. You see, Noel also suffered from Parkinson’s disease. He rarely spoke and his steps were small and well thought out.
Inside I could see he was a powerful man yet in a non-obliging body, but he kept strong.
I’m pretty sure I can speak for everyone that knew Noel and say to Lyn, his loving and caring wife, and mother of their children... Our hearts are with you beautiful lady, smile – Noel has gone the best way he knew how, doing what he loved. I hope he caught the biggest fish.
We sing out to the universe and ocean – Happy fishing Noel.”
