Nambucca Heads’ Craig Jarrett was pleasantly surprised when he rolled into Coffs Harbour’s Sportz
Central for his first basketball session for 2012, after the Christmas break.
When Craig made his way into the basketball stadium, waiting for him in centre court was his new basketball wheelchair.
It arrived just in time for him to use it at the upcoming junior basketball training and selection camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport in Narrabeen
next weekend.
North Coast coordinator of wheelchair sports Ray Munro was delighted to hand over the allen key, which officially declared Craig’s ownership of the chair.
The chair was made by Terry Mason, a paraplegic and keen sports person, from Taree.
Craig would like to thank all those generous people who helped fund the purchase of his chair.
A collection at the Nambucca Roosters’ rugby league grand final started the fund-raising efforts.
This was followed by a great buggy derby day at Nambucca Heads High School on Melbourne Cup Day,
which saw students push their self-made buggies around a course designed by Gary Cattanach, who organised the event.
Other funds have come from the Nambucca Heads RSL Club, the Nambucca Heads Bowling and Recreation Club and Booroongen Djugun Aboriginal
Corporation.
Na mbucca Heads Sports and Leagues Club has promised financial support for Craig’s ongoing training commitments.
The Valley Gym is also supporting Craig by giving him a 12-month gym membership.
Coastal Curves and Nambucca T-shirts have also been
supportive in discounting items needed to pursue his
sporting programs.
Craig’s latest highlight is a planned trip to Sydney this week to train with wheelchair athletes who will be
competing in the Summer Down Under Series, which culminates in a 10 kilometre road race around the Rocks area of Sydney on Australia Day.
Craig is looking forward to experiencing wheelchair racing for the first time under the guidance of elite
athletes.
