Council addresses nudist beach push

23 Oct, 2008 03:00 AM
Tourism numbers could actually fall if Nambucca Shire Council makes part of Valla Beach ‘clothing optional’, according to councillor Elaine South.

The Nambucca Valley Nudist Group has asked council to consider making the area a legal site for nudist gatherings.

According to the group’s submission, the move would open up new tourism avenues, including tapping into the travelling nudist market.

However, Cr Elaine South said she had major concerns about the proposed site of the 300-metre long stretch of beach, around 100 metres south of Deep Creek, and close to Valla Beach Resort.

“In respect to families, it could be a deterrent,” she said.

“I’ve got grandchildren, and I don’t think I would like them to come across people who were ‘optionally clothed’.”

Cr South urged the nudist group to choose another area that was less public.

Council resolved to refer the proposal to the Valla Beach Urban and Hall Committee, the NSW Police Force and Valla Beach Resort.

Firstly I'll like to say I'm a happily married man in my late 30s, with two young children...and we're all happily being nudists. Shame on Nambucca and Valla communities if they don't approve a "clothes optional" beach.

What a selfish attitude to have, thinking it's ok to support nudists but "not in my backyard"...well guess what, it's a public beach and NUDISTS HAVE A RIGHT TO USE THEM TOO!!!!!

I was personally at these meeting and found only the narrow minded were taking a stand...unfortunately the nudists are outnumbered.

Please support our cause, it's only our basic right to enjoy the beaches as we see fit that we're asking for. Can't be so hard to make 300 metres of beach legal for "clothes optional" swimming can it??

I would definitely visit Nambucca if there was a nude beach. I've been to the one at Coffs Harbour, but this would be more accessible.

I found the comment concerning grandchildren amusing. I have been around people when they have come across people skinny dipping. They immediately want to make sure the children don't see. What is most amusing is the kids don't care! It is the adult's behaviour that indicates there is something wrong. Otherwise the kids will go along with what they are doing with out giving the matter a lot of thought. One other thought. Proper signage should keep the adults informed so that this matter can be a moot point. If adults are aware of what is going around them, their families should never get close enough for this to be a problem. Are the adults willing to accept that reponsibility. I think that is an important question.

The Italian government has recently allocated the equivalent of about 2 million Australian dollars to improving and promoting naturist facilities in Italy. The aim is to both reduce the loss due to Italian naturists going abroad and to encourage naturists from elsewhere to visit Italy. Elaine South's comments about children are offensive and they are particularly offensive to naturist families. She is assuming that other people share her attitudes. Children don't have any problem over nudity but some adults imagine one. The research evidence is absolutely conclusive. She is encouraging attitudes which are known to be harmful to young people, often very harmful. It is not coincidence that teenagers in prudish western countries are nearly ten times more likely to become pregnant, nearly ten times more likely to have an abortion and over seventy times more likely to catch gonorrhea than their contemporaries in the most liberal countries. Prudery is child abuse and no amount of prejudice can make up for that simple fact. People without clothes, get over it.
