Tourism numbers could actually fall if Nambucca Shire Council makes part of Valla Beach ‘clothing optional’, according to councillor Elaine South.
The Nambucca Valley Nudist Group has asked council to consider making the area a legal site for nudist gatherings.
According to the group’s submission, the move would open up new tourism avenues, including tapping into the travelling nudist market.
However, Cr Elaine South said she had major concerns about the proposed site of the 300-metre long stretch of beach, around 100 metres south of Deep Creek, and close to Valla Beach Resort.
“In respect to families, it could be a deterrent,” she said.
“I’ve got grandchildren, and I don’t think I would like them to come across people who were ‘optionally clothed’.”
Cr South urged the nudist group to choose another area that was less public.
Council resolved to refer the proposal to the Valla Beach Urban and Hall Committee, the NSW Police Force and Valla Beach Resort.
