A Sydney entrepreneur on a surfing holiday in Nambucca Heads is taking home a lot more than just memories of his favourite break off the headland after winning a massive $150,000 Keno jackpot on Monday.
The surfer, who hails from Berowra in Northern Sydney and wishes to keep his identity private, dropped in to the Nambucca Leagues and Sports Club for the $7.50 lunch special and replayed the $2 Keno ticket that would change his life.
He said it was definitely the best summer surfing getaway of his life - but not the last, thanks to Keno.
He said he now plans to take another surfing holiday to Phuket, Thailand, buy a new car, and invest the rest of the money - and buy his ‘ecstatic’ mum some flowers.
Despite being thrilled about the jackpot, the winner said he had remained calm when he went to the counter to check if he was holding the winning ticket because he didn’t believe it could possibly be his.
“When they announced that the 9-number jackpot had gone off and someone in the club might be holding the winning ticket, I went straight up to the Keno counter,” he said.
“There were a couple of people playing nine numbers, so I didn’t think it could be me,” the winner said. “I thought ‘it has to be someone else’.
“I hadn’t scanned my ticket yet when the phone rang and the Keno operator said that the jackpot had definitely been won in the club.
“When we scanned the ticket and it came up that I had won, I was completely shocked.”
The surfer invested just $2 - $1 per game - on the Keno Replay ticket that returned $151,025.
He said he played Keno whenever he visited one of his local pubs or clubs, and always played the same nine numbers which included special birth dates such as his own, his first girlfriend’s and his mother’s.
The winning numbers were 46, 49, 50, 52, 54, 60, 62, 63 and 75.
Keno sales manager Paul Carew said he was thrilled the northern Sydney holidaymaker had won the jackpot.
“I’m pretty sure Nambucca Heads is going to be an even more popular holiday destination after this major Keno jackpot win,” Paul said.
“I have no doubt our winner is pretty happy he decided to take a summer surfing vacation there.
“We are just so thrilled to hear that a regular Keno player has had their life changed by Keno,” he said.
“No other game gives you the chance to win more than $1 million every three minutes.”
Keno gives away around $27 million to NSW players each month.
