Australia Day revellers gather at Gordon Park

28 Jan, 2010 09:19 AM
Under the stinging Aussie sun, revellers from throughout the Valley gathered at Gordon Park for the Annual Nambucca Lions Australia Day Carnival on Tuesday.

The main event was the raft race, which this year saw 18 rafts compete, paddling from Bellwood to Gordon Park’s boat ramp, to claim the $50 first prize.

The Taylor family crew from Bowraville; Kelly and Daniel, with their Dad Ian, took the lead in the race and kept it for a convincing win in the home-made raft category.

Complete with ‘See you later’ painted on the raft’s tail end, the pressure was on for the Taylors to put their money where their mouth was and win the day – which they effortlessly did in their polly-pipe craft, aptly named Pipster.

Coming in first place in the modified craft category was Team Capsize, made up of Macksville boys; Martin Gleeson, James Bagnell, Chris Richards-Murray and Ben Reynolds.

Twenty-six surfboards competed in the surfboard stint from Bellwood, with Thibaut Clarke and Shivaun Street taking out the senior category.

Keegan Street and Sophie Atkins came first in the junior’s category.
