A brave message for Schapelle Corby

A brave message for Schapelle Corby

29/01/2009 4:00:00 AM
It has been four years since Schapelle Corby was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in a Balinese prison after smuggling four kilograms of cannabis into Indonesia.

In that time, many people have joined in the crusade to support Schapelle in what could only be described as a nightmare.

Local trio, Vanessa Lea and Road Train, was touched by Schapelle’s story and dedicated a song to her fight for freedom and to encourage her to hold on. The song was written by Vanessa and Roger Faynes.

“The song describes the events leading up to Schapelle’s conviction and the emotions she must have felt at the time, and how it is important that the Australian public does not forget her,” Ms Faynes said.

“The song presents no particular point of view as to her innocence or guilt, but is simply a comment on human injustice and an attempt to support a fellow Australian who is in a very dire predicament.”

Following completion of the song, ‘Be Brave’, in August last year, two copies were sent to Mercedes Corby, Schapelle’s sister.

Early in the New Year, Schapelle sent a hand-written card to the Faynes, personally thanking them for their support and for the song, which she says she loved.

A clip of the song appears on ‘Youtube’ and ‘myspace’.

The clip can be viewed on the Vanessa Lea and Road Train website: www.myspace.com/vanessalearoadtra in

Catch Vanessa Lea and Roadtrain when they perform live at Nambucca Heads’ V-Wall Tavern, on Friday, February 20. They are also about to release their new CD, with the help of close friend and mentor, John Bromell, former publisher for Warner and Rondor music.

Gosh...I really don't understand the sympathy for this family.

Her young brother did a home invasion with a baseball bat, her step brother Clinton has been in and out of jail for years, convicted Adelaide dealer Malcolm Macauley has admitted giving the 4.2 kilo bag to her deceased father Michael and yet people still want to feel sorry for them, I find it staggering.

That is all very nice but is it going to get Schapelle out of jail?

What is the Australian government (or anyone for that matter) doing to secure her release?

Thank you for doing this Vanessa! Standing up for a cause when it goes against popular opinion takes a lot of strength and courage. The fact remain that police refused Schapelle's request for fingerprinting and DNA testing.

The boogie board bag was out of her control for 12 hours, the one witness against her did not speak English, and Judge Sirat bragged about how he never found anyone to be iinnocent.

Queensland police also officially cleared the entire Corby family of any connection to drug traffiking.

Bottom line is that Schapelle Leigh Corby did not get a fair trial and Australia should be outraged.

You scum. The Guardian article is a disgrace. "It has been four years since Schapelle Corby was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in a Balinese prison after smuggling four kilograms of cannabis into Indonesia." All the evidence points to her innocence, and a conspiracy to convict her. But no, you say "after smuggling". Is the Fairfax press also a part of the conspiracy, along with the Murdoch press? Have you no sense of justice, humanity, right and wrong? I challenge you to post this comment, but I expect that you will not. After all, manipulation of public opinion remains the name of the game. Robert Halligan Sleep well.

I'm very sad about the story... Indonesia is a barbaric, inhuman place... but I am very glad of the song... thank you Vanessa...

I have just watched the HBO documentry and I am outraged that this woman can be charged without any physical evidence against her. Her country had better step up to the plate and bring this innocent girl home.

I am appalled to see that Shapelle's own country will not step up to her defense. It seems so clear there was some illegal political wars going on here, from the time that girl left the airport to the present. Obviously the person who was amazed at her innocence hasn't read or seen any of this circus these lawyers and officials have created from an innocent bystanders nightmare.
