Nambucca man dies in Urunga crash

12 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
Following the death of Nambucca local, David Levett, 38, and Penrith boy Max McGregor, 11, in a Pacific Highway crash at Urunga on the weekend, locals and MPs are pushing for an upgrade to the notorious strip of road.

Investigators believe the southbound truck driver attempted to avoid a collision with the northbound Holden Commodore ute, which was on the wrong side of the road. The truck hit the ute, driven by Mr Levett, was forced off the road and crashed into a house, where Max McGregor was sleeping. Investigations into the crash are continuing.

Mr Levett’s family have paid tribute to his free spirit and big heart, as he was the first to help anyone in need.

This accident has highlighted why the Warrell Creek to Urunga upgrade must be the next funding priority of the highway duplication, Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker said on Monday.

“There is no doubt that Warrell Creek to Urunga is the worst section of road on the Pacific Highway. The statistics spell out why this section of road must be the funding priority,” he said.

“More than 25 people have lost their lives there over the past five years. At the end of 2011, we saw a fatality at Warrell Creek and we also saw a semi-trailer end up in the Nambucca River after an accident near the Macksville Bridge.”

Nambucca Shire Council has also recently been pushing for the Warrell Creek to Urunga section of the highway to be upgraded as a priority.

According to a survey completed by the NRMA in 2011, the section of highway between Warrell Creek and Urunga was identified as the worst in the state.

Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner described the crash as an “immense tragedy that has left many of us deeply saddened”.

“It also steadies our resolve to achieve the Prime Minister’s deadline of 2016 for duplication of the Pacific Highway,” he said.

Why can't people take responsibility for their own actions instead of pointing the blame!? What was he doing on the wrong side of the road to start with? Doing something illegal by the sounds of it! The road doesn't kill people, people in cars who do stupid things kill people! Regardless of how good a road is there will still be careless drivers who cause accidents like this. One happened on yesterday in Sydney where a speeding car went into a home injuring a boy. Just proves these accidents happen on all road types! Take responsibility for your actions!

What if you were driving North on the Highway and as you round a bend a B double with a sleeping driver on cruse control starts to come onto your side of the road, there is no where to go on your left so you flash your lights, but nothing, so you drive onto the incorrect side of the road, hoping the driver does not wake up, but he does and sees you on the wrong side of the road coming towards you and both drivers go left but collide and the accident occurs. All this happens in seconds. Could this be possible how this accident occurred? I have seen trucks and cars with sleeping drivers.

before all the hype about the notorious road strip, see what the blood alcohol and drug samples from the ute driver return. was'nt he on the wrong side of the road at the time of the accident. lets be realistic and look at all the facts, not just the road.
